Surah An-Nisa : Chapter 4 (line 30-40) Women

30. Whoever does that, out of hostility and wrongdoing, We will cast him into a Fire. And that would be easy for God.

31. If you avoid the worst of what you are forbidden, We will remit your sins, and admit you by a Gate of Honor.

32. Do not covet what God has given to some of you in preference to others. For men is a share of what they have earned, and for women is a share of what they have earned. And ask God of his bounty. God has knowledge of everything.

33. To everyone We have assigned beneficiaries in what is left by parents and relatives. Those with whom you have made an agreement, give them their share. God is Witness over all things.

34. Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, as God has given some of them an advantage over others, and because they spend out of their wealth. The good women are obedient, guarding what God would have them guard. As for those from whom you fear disloyalty, admonish them, and abandon them in their beds, then strike them. But if they obey you, seek no way against them. God is Sublime, Great.

35. If you fear a breach between the two, appoint an arbiter from his family and an arbiter from her family. If they wish to reconcile, God will bring them together. God is Knowledgeable, Expert.

36. Worship God, and ascribe no partners to Him, and be good to the parents, and the relatives, and the orphans, and the poor, and the neighbor next door, and the distant neighbor, and the close associate, and the traveler, and your servants. God does not love the arrogant showoff.

37. Those who are stingy, and exhort people to stinginess, and conceal what God has given them from His bounty. We have prepared for the disbelievers a disgraceful punishment.

38. And those who spend their money to be seen by people, and believe neither in God nor in the Last Day. Whoever has Satan as a companion-what an evil companion.

39. What would they have lost, had they believed in God and the Last Day, and gave out of what God has provided for them? God knows them very well.

40. God does not commit an atom’s weight of injustice; and if there is a good deed, He doubles it, and gives from His Presence a sublime compensation.

My interpretation:

Muhammad is explained by Gabriel that everything is equal in regards to the gender. Women and men are not regarded unequal in terms of sins committed or good deeds done. Each will have their just rewards.

Written wills need to be honored in regards to giving wealth that is just due to people regardless of gender. I imagine in the past, women were treated very unfairly and their family inheritance and dowry was confiscated just because they were women.

Men were to be protectors of women and to use the strengths given to them to provide for their women. Line 34 is a hard line to understand if you do not see the good in God. In the past, when a woman was disloyal or cheated on her husband, she was killed or beaten towards no end. Here God says, there are steps to take towards a cheating wife. First you admonish which means to scold them and tell them what they did wrong. If they repent, you stop there and live peacefully with your loving wife. If they cheat on the man again, the man is to leave her bedroom and not have sex with her until she repents and asks for forgiveness seeing the light of her wrongs. If after the third time, they are found to cheat, then strike them in a way that was permissible in their society by a means of punishment. Hopefully after this pain of punishment, these women would finally feel the regret of their actions. It is a hard lesson for some women, but notice it says “strike”, singular-not plural.

This does NOT advocate for abuse of women. It was to correct and provide the means to feel regret and guilt for the woman. In the past, worse was done to a cheating woman-far worse than a strike. If the woman is just not a good person, then she will never repent, and God will judge her. This goes for men too. Of course it is always better to solve problems without physical violence. So do not transgress, and know God is always watching and protecting the woman. Muslim men and non-muslim men who beat their wives today without following their true guidance are in grave danger in the hereafter, if they are not discovered on earth by man’s law.

Divorce is permitted once it is established in a fair way. an arbitrator from her family, and his must come together to represent each the husband and wife. There they can discuss the means of separation and fulfillment financially, to make things fair. Remember women didn’t have a lot of means to making their own money yet, so every divorced woman was due money to help her. We have these divorce laws still today to help women who depended on their men to provide for them while married.

Showing off with charity defeats the purpose of the good deed. So Muhammad is told to tell the people if you are going to give, then be humble about your giving.

Line 40 is an amazing line to me and is one of the many reasons, why I am a muslim. God is explained in a way that be understood as energy here. All thoughts, actions, and deeds are energy that can not be destroyed once put out there, all it can be is changed. God is the True Reality, so all the energy put out there in the world and universe, is accounted for and collected in the end. There is no concealing both the good and bad, that someone has done. If the good outweighs the bad, then God will reward accordingly. If the bad outweigh the good, then also will God award accordingly. The rewards will be experienced in the next life, and you have the choice of which type of reward you will receive.

Surah An-Nisa : Chapter 4 (line 20-30) Women

20. If you wish to replace one wife with another, and you have given one of them a fortune, take nothing back from it. Would you take it back fraudulently and sinfully?

21. And how can you take it back, when you have been intimate with one another, and they have received from you a solid commitment?

22. Do not marry women whom your fathers married, except what is already past. That is improper, indecent, and a bad custom.

23. Forbidden for you are your mothers, your daughters, your sisters, your paternal aunts, your maternal aunts, your brother’s daughters, your sister’s daughters, your foster-mothers who nursed you, your sisters through nursing, your wives’ mothers, and your stepdaughters in your guardianship-born of wives you have gone into-but if you have not gone into them, there is no blame on you. And the wives of your genetic sons, and marrying two sisters simultaneously. Except what is past. God is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

24. And all married women, except those you rightfully possess. This is God’s decree, binding upon you. Permitted for you are those that lie outside these limits, provided you seek them in legal marriage, with gifts from your property, seeking wedlock, not prostitution. If you wish to enjoy them, then give them their dowry-a legal obligation. You commit no error by agreeing to any change to the dowry. God is All-Knowing, Most Wise.

25. If any of you lack the means to marry free believing women, he may marry one of the believing maids under your control. God is well aware of your faith. You are from one another. Marry them with the permission of their guardians, and give them their recompense fairly-to be protected-neither committing adultery, nor taking secret lovers. When they are married, if they commit adultery, their punishment shall be half that of free women. That is for those among you who fear falling into decadence. But to practice self-restraint is better for you. God is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.

26. God intends to make things clear to you, and to guide you in the ways of those before you, and to redeem you. God is Most Knowing, Most Wise.

27. God intends to redeem you, but those who follow their desires want you to turn away utterly.

28. God intends to lighten your burden, for the human being was created weak.

29. O you who believe! Do not consume each other’s wealth illicitly, but trade by mutual consent. And do not kill yourselves, for God is Merciful towards you.

30. Whoever does that, out of hostility and wrongdoing, We will cast him into a Fire. And that would be easy for God.

My Interpretation:

Here Gabriel is telling Muhammad what to teach the people. If you are a man who wants another wife, then you must give all the dowery back to her. You can not sleep with another and start a family with another woman, while keeping the wealth of your past wife. It is wrong and it was a practice being done.

Also men marrying their own mothers, must have been an ancestral custom of the past. Gabriel has taught Muhammad this is a thing society does not want to keep doing. All incest is FORBIDDEN by God now, and Gabriel makes this very clear.

Incest is forbidden not just for the indecency of it, but for also the medical reasons. Incest takes the dominant genes of the family and makes them mutated, so many children born of incest usually are disabled and impaired physically and mentally.

You may now not have a woman without courtship and eventual marriage, it is a sad societal custom of even today..and many women still get hurt from these men that use them physically and abandon them when bored with them. These are behaviors of men that have been grieving women for a very long time and it is time they stop, Muhammad is shown.

Do not lie, steal, commit rape, incest, and also do not be so lost without faith, to commit suicide. These are all things against God and will be judged accordingly to the person who did the deeds.

Surah An-Nisa : Chapter 4 (line 10-20) Women

10. Those who consume the wealth of orphans illicitly consume only fire into their bellies; and they will roast in a Blaze.

11. God instructs you regarding your children: The male receives the equivalent of the share of two females. If they are daughters, more than two, they get two-thirds of what he leaves. If there is only one, she gets one-half. As for the parents, each gets one-sixth of what he leaves, if he had children. If he had no children, and his parents inherit from him, his mother gets one-third. If he has siblings, his mother gets one-sixth. After fulfilling any bequest and paying off debts. Your parents and your children-you do not know which are closer to you in welfare. This is God’s Law. God is Knowing and Judicious.

12. You get one-half of what your wives leave behind, if they had no children. If they had children, you get one-fourth of what they leave. After fulfilling any bequest and paying off debts. They get one-fourth of what you leave behind, if you have no children. If you have children, they get one-eighth of what you leave. After fulfilling any bequest and paying off debts. If a man or woman leaves neither parents nor children, but has a brother or sister, each of them gets one-sixth. If there are more siblings, they share one-third. After fulfilling any bequest and paying off debts, without any prejudice. This is a will from God. God is Knowing and Clement.

13. These are the bounds set by God. Whoever obeys God and His Messenger, He will admit him into Gardens beneath which rivers flow, to abide therein forever. That is the great attainment.

14. But whoever disobeys God and His Messenger, and oversteps His bounds, He will admit him into a Fire, wherein he abides forever, and he will have a shameful punishment.

15. Those of your women who commit lewdness, you must have four witnesses against them, from among you. If they testify, confine them to the homes until death claims them, or God makes a way for them.

16. If two men among you commit it, punish them both. But if they repent and reform, leave them alone. God is Redeemer, Full of Mercy.

17. Repentance is available from God for those who commit evil out of ignorance, and then repent soon after. These-God will relent towards them. God is Knowing and Wise.

18. But repentance is not available for those who commit evils, until when death approaches one of them, he says, “Now I repent,” nor for those who die as disbelievers. These-We have prepared for them a painful torment.

19. O you who believe! It is not permitted for you to inherit women against their will. And do not coerce them in order to take away some of what you had given them, unless they commit a proven adultery. And live with them in kindness. If you dislike them, it may be that you dislike something in which God has placed much good.

20. If you wish to replace one wife with another, and you have given one of them a fortune, take nothing back from it. Would you take it back fraudulently and sinfully?

My Interpretation:

Wealth distribution in society is being laid out in terms of what is ethical and reasonable. Since men were the earners of the family in the past, they should receive twice as much as the females because the men are the providers. Men had to buy the materials to create a home, earn a living working hard in the sun to pay for food not grown by him. Men had the majority of financial responsibilities back then while women cleaned, cooked, and took care of children.

Gabriel is speaking towards the time at hand in 600AD and many people who read the Quran forget this. This needs to be taken into context of the time in history to fully understand the Quran and it’s laws. Still today, many women do stay home with the children while the men work. I personally, love this role as a care giver. Some women will work as well as their husband, but someone has to care for the children, so either it is you as the parent, or a nanny.

The distribution laws between relatives continue and it can be seen as a logical distribution according to the person’s age, status in life, and needs. There is a warning to remember these fair boundaries set and to not overstep them and take more of your share, or it can cause you to imprint badly on your own soul.

God makes it very hard to punish people. But in any society some form of justice has to be taken, so here Muhammad is given a way to protect women from unjust accusations of their personal character. It must be VERY hard to get 4 witnesses to say truthfully with the fear of God, that a women was acting in adultery. So instead of just having a riot charge at the prostitute that Jesus saved, named Mary Magdalene, there must be a true trial and witnesses. God must have found something honorable in her heart in order for Jesus to recognize her and to teach the people the unjustness of their ways.

Now in Arabia, a just trial had to be given where 4 people were true witnesses to seeing a women be a prostitute or cheat on her husband. And once again God knows the women’s heart. So if they are truly guilty of not being a good women who cares for herself and others, then she will perish in a prison. But if God does find her innocent or worthy of mercy in her quest for forgiveness, then through the acts of others, she will be released.

No more can men make one claim against a woman he lusts for or does not like, and she be killed by a riot or himself. NOW a law is established in these once pagan lands in Arabia.

Even men are not exempt from sleeping around on their wives now. They will be punished in the same way by God, except if they show sincere change and repent. But if someone is too stubborn to seek forgiveness until the day they fear their death-it is too late to show your change.

It was very difficult to be a woman BEFORE Islam, in these desert lands. As you can see women were forced into situations without any prior knowledge of consequences. God is indeed the protector of innocent women. No longer can a man rape, force a woman into a relationship with him, take all her wealth away, and then leave a woman for another younger woman. God is always watching and the Angels are always recording.

Men must be kind and just towards women-ALWAYS.

Surah An-Nisa : Chapter 4 (line 1-10) Women

In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful.

1. O people! Fear your Lord, who created you from a single soul, and created from it its mate, and propagated from them many men and women. And revere God whom you ask about, and the parents. Surely, God is Watchful over you.

2. And give orphans their properties, and do not substitute the bad for the good. And do not consume their properties by combining them with yours, for that would be a serious sin.

3. If you fear you cannot act fairly towards the orphans-then marry the women you like-two, or three, or four. But if you fear you will not be fair, then one, or what you already have. That makes it more likely that you avoid bias.

4. Give women their dowries graciously. But if they willingly forego some of it, then consume it with enjoyment and pleasure.

5. Do not give the immature your money which God has assigned to you for support. But provide for them from it, and clothe them, and speak to them with kind words.

6. Test the orphans until they reach the age of marriage. If you find them to be mature enough, hand over their properties to them. And do not consume it extravagantly or hastily before they grow up. The rich shall not charge any wage, but the poor may charge fairly. When you hand over their properties to them, have it witnessed for them. God suffices as a Reckoner.

7. Men receive a share of what their parents and relatives leave, and women receive a share of what their parents and relatives leave; be it little or much-a legal share.

8. If the distribution is attended by the relatives, and the orphans, and the needy, give them something out of it, and speak to them kindly.

9. Those who are concerned about the fate of their weak children, in case they leave them behind, should fear God, and speak appropriate words.

10. Those who consume the wealth of orphans illicitly consume only fire into their bellies; and they will roast in a Blaze.

My Interpretation:

The Angel is telling Muhammad that it is important to take care of the unwanted, deserted or parentless children. They are our future and the Angel know this is what humanity needs to be told. Orphans need to be taken care of by fairly giving them their property left to them and helping them. Their parents’ houses can not be taken over by those in charge nor their wealth by confiscated leaving them to starve in the streets. Muhammad is given the common sense, that humanity can only strive if the children are cared for mentally, emotionally, and physically.

Polygamy is granted to care for all these children, almost like employing mothers to care for the orphans. However, there is a strong suggestion that if you can not equally divide your love and attention to each woman, do not marry more than one. God knows this will cause hardships to women and eventually end in suffering.

Testing orphans to me means teaching them to become smart and successful adults, before they are given their wealth, and property. Gabriel knows that when you put the children first in society, it can thrive. Children are our future and need to be protected and taken care of in order to keep the good going in the world. “Fires in the bellies” of those who don’t do this, is saying that they will be their own cause of demise if they do not put the children first-always. The good fruits of society can not grow with bad seeds planted.
